Herbert John Seeley and Veronica Sarah Graham

Seeley_Herbert_&_Veronica_1981.jpg

Herbert and Veronica were married in 1927. Herbert was the oldest of 7 children of John Wade Seeley a labourer at the steel works and Julia Peart. Both born in the Scunthorpe area. Herberts father, John Wade Seeley died at the end of the first world war when Herbert was only 11 years old leaving his mother Julia with seven children to raise. (one of the children, Charles died the following year aged 5.)

Veronica was the second youngest of eight children of Alexander Graham who was born in Scotland, he was also a labourer at the steel works and Sarah Brennen who was born in Manchester.

Herbert was mainly unemployed until he was around 26 due to the stagnant economy. He then started full time work at the Appley Froddingham steelworks in Scunthorpe. Starting in 1933, he worked there for 35 years, first as a shear driver and later operating the giant overhead gantry cranes until he and Veronica emigrated to Perth, Western Australia in 1968.

Veronica's family were Catholic and her three children Eric, Brenda and Donald attended mass regularly. My father Eric tells me he was an alter boy and also in the church choir. Due to the hard times in the early years of their marriage Veronica brought up her three young children, feeding them from the vegetable garden, the chicken run and the rabbit hutch, and sewing their clothes. Then during the second world war when there was a labour shortage she donned her overalls and went to work in the steel works as did many other woman during this time. She was a small women under 5ft in height, but by all accounts (and hers!) she "worked as hard as any man".

In 1968 when Herbert was 61 and Veronica 62 they boarded the Fairsky to sail to Australia to join their son Eric and his family and their daughter Brenda and her family. Both families had emigrated to Perth two years earlier. Their third child Donald emigrated to Perth later in the 1980's with his wife Joyce. Don and Joyce's two adult daughters remained in England. On arrival in Perth, Herbert found work at Moulangs, a structural steel works on Railway Parade in Ashfield, where Eric also worked at that time. I recall that he would cut other workers hair during the lunch break as he had done for many years in England. He also continued to cut my dad's hair and mine too during Sunday visits to our house in Morley; even as his shakes became more violent and the nicks more frequent! Herbert and Veronica lived in a one bedroom flat in Altair Street, Dianella until Herbert retired. Once retired they moved to a retirement village in Denston Way, Girawheen where Herbert was the caretaker. Veronica died in 1981 a few weeks before her 76th birthday and after her death Herbert had to move from their home as it was designated for a couple only. He spent some time with Brenda and John and then with Eric and Evelyn before he found accomadation in a retirement home in Leederville. He died there in 1989 at the age of 82.

Arthur Charles Clarke Bellamy and Lily Booth

Bellamy_Booth_Lion.jpg

Arthur Charles Clarke Bellamy and Lily Booth had two daughters, twins born on 9th May 1930. My mother Evelyn and my aunty Alleen were identical twins and they were very close throughout their lives, they even had a double wedding in 1951.

Arthur, born in 1902 was the son of Charles Bellamy a blast furnace labourer at the steel works and Maria Rose Clarke, from who Arthur inherited the Clarke name. Arthur had contracted polio as a child and suffered the effects all his life. In his early fifties he suffered a major stroke and was eventually released from hospital to be cared for at home. He never recovered and died in 1954 at the age of 52.

Lily was born in 1907 and was the daughter of William Booth a furnaceman, who was also working at the steel works and Lucy Hannah Hare.

Later Lily married Ernest Albert Tutty in 1963. They were both in their mid fifties by now and a few years later towards the end of 1967, following Lily's two daughters Evelyn and Aleen they emigrated to Perth, Western Australia. This was a couple of months before Evelyn's parents in law, Herbert and Veronica Seeley also emigrated. For a while they lived in the same block of flats in Altair St Dianella as Herbert and Veronica before moving to a duplex in Rivervale. It was here Lily died in 1970 aged 63 years.

Albert (Ernest) lived until 2000. He was 92 years old. Albert had lost contact with Lily's family after her death.

Arthur Alfred Clutterbuck and Ada Edith Bruniges

Clutterbuck_Bruniges_1966.jpg Arthur and Ada arrived in Fremantle, Western Australia with their two youngest sons, Roy and Kenneth [on date?] aboard the ship Angelina Lauro. Their second oldest son, Arthur Harold along with his wife Sheila and their 4 children had arrived in Perth a short while earlier in November 1966. Their eldest son Peter remained in England. It is said he was unable to obtain a passport due to some criminal involvement. Unlike most English migrants who arrived under the assisted passage scheme, Arthur and Ada paid their own fare. This was so they could bring their boxer dog [name] with them. The photo on the right shows Arthur and Ada with their dog on-board the Angelina Lauro.

Arthur and Ada were married at the end of January 1939, while Arthur was still only 17 and Ada 18. They were expecting their first child Peter who was born just 3 months later. World war was declared in September of the same year. Arthur was employed as a mattress maker when they were married and in 1941 was with the Rifles Infantry.

Arthur was the oldest of 2 children. His father Harold was born in Kensington in 1897 and was stationed in Gosport during the first world war where he was a Gunner with the Royal Garrison Artillery. It was here Harold married Arthur's mother, Dorothy Morris who had been born in East Stonehouse, Devon in 1899. Arthur was born in Alverstoke, Gosport in 1921. Some time later after Harold was discharged from the army the family moved back to London where they had a daughter named Joyce in 1929.

Ada was the middle child of 10 children of Alfred Edward Bruniges born in Islington in 1891 and Emily Clarke born in Lambeth in 1892. Aflred was a Sapper with the Royal Engineers during the first world war. Later he was a Telephone Testing Officer.

In Perth, Arthur and Ada lived for a time in [Lynwood?], and then on South Western Highway in Armadale. Ada passed away in December 1982 aged 62 years. Arthur died in Geraldton in December 2003 aged 82 years having lost touch with his family after Ada's death.
