Notes for Eric Herbert Seeley
Eulogy for Eric. Written by his daughter Pamela and read at his funeral.
Eric was born on 31st July 1927 in Scunthorpe, Lincolnshire, a redhead, the first child of Herbert (always known as Nav) and Veronica and from all accounts he had a happy and carefree childhood - climbing trees, making cubbies in Acky’s Warren, getting into scrapes and generally being a lad.
He was always a protective older brother to Brenda and Don and they all attended the Doncaster Road School. He left there on his 14th birthday with a good reference and a job waiting for him in the warehouse of the co-op pharmacy.
After only a few months he started work at the Appleby Frodingham Steel Works as a junior clerk, his first job was to deliver the internal mail and he would stop always stop in at each department and learn about what they were doing. In 1943 he began an apprenticeship as a plater there at the steel works.
In November 1945, at the age of 18, he left to do his National Service and joined the 2nd Battalion of the Essex Regiment. It was here that he first showed his true colours as a leader rising to become one of the youngest sergeants in the regiment.
In the aftermath of the war he was stationed in France guarding trains containg returning POWs and the Italy where he was involved with guarding German war criminals at the war courts.
He returned to Scunthorpe to complete his apprenticeship in May 1948 remaining at the steelworks and rising to the position of foreman before leaving in 1966 to bring the family to Perth.
He was introduced to Evelyn, the love of his life, at the Doncaster Road corner, not long after returning from his National Service and they married on March 10th 1951 in a double wedding with Evelyn’s twin sister Aleen and her husband Jack.
The young couple bought a brand new home in Baysdale Road, Ashby and it wasn’t long before they were blessed with the arrival of their little girl Pamela in 1953, the apple of her dad’s eye. Four years later Garry arrived to complete their family unit.
The family always made the most of every opportunity for enjoyment and fun, joining Evelyn’s sister and her family for Christmases and summer holidays. Most summers Eric would bundle Evelyn, Pamela and Garry into the car and, come rain or shine, ensure that they had a wonderful summer holiday. Sometimes they only went an hour away to Cleethorpes or Skegness but several years saw them make the long trek to the south coast of England to stay in the iconic small hotels along the seafront in Bournemouth or Paignton.
In 1963 Eric and the family moved to another new home in Yaddlethorpe and it was there a couple of years later that he made the decision to move his young family thousands of miles across the world for a better life. Eric and Evelyn never regretted that decision and when asked recently why he made the move he said that it was because he knew there was some place better to bring up a family than a grey steelworks town.
Within 2 days of arriving in Perth in September 1966, Eric had found work and settled his family into a new way of living. He adapted amazingly well to his new life, taking to the outdoor lifestyle with enthusiasm and energy - camping, fishing, prawning and crabbing as often as he could.
With Evelyn he bought a new home in Morley where he loved creating a lush garden, always with lots of colour, he added a patio, then an aviary and eventually built a swimming pool, doing much of the work himself.
Over the next few years most of the family followed him to Perth including his parents and his sister Brenda with her family. Eric and Evelyn made a few close friends and began the infamous camping trips on long weekends, they spent as much time as possible out doing things that they’d never been able to do before.
Grandchildren began to arrive - all girls, 2 redheads, like himself and 2 blondes, and he absolutely doted on those girls. He was always extremely proud of everything they did in life and to the end he loved to hear about everything they were doing and where they were going. He would always welcome their friends, the school friends, the boyfriends that came and went and those that became permanent members of the family. Those friends have very fond memories of him and of Evelyn from many years ago.
There was a glitch though mid-way through this long and happy life. At the age of 49 Eric contracted stomach cancer, the doctors weren’t hopeful, it was rare to overcome this form of the disease, but Eric had no intention of giving in to it. After having a major operation to remove part of his stomach and part of his oesophagus, Eric grabbed on to the life he loved and pulled through to rejoin his family and outlive many of his contemporaries, making it to a fabulous 90 years young.
Eric returned to work for a few years and then retired at the age of 60 to spend the next 20 years thoroughly enjoying life with Evelyn. They moved to Mandurah, went fishing, crabbing and prawning alongside Aleen and her husband Jack. They travelled interstate and overseas, visiting Garry and his family in Sri Lanka and Pam and her family in England for extended holidays. They eventually moved back to Perth in 1999, to the northern suburbs, to once again be closer to family.
Sadly, Evelyn passed away in September 2006 leaving a huge hole in his life and his heart. They had been married for 56 years and were still as in much in love then as they were when they married.
Eric continued to live in their home in Kinross, he still travelled occasionally, taking a cruise to Singapore and a trip to Melbourne with Pamela and visiting Garry and his family in the south of the state. He lived a quiet life, reading extensively for as long as he could, going out for coffee or a pint at his favourite pub and taking an interest in current affairs.
The family were his lifeline, his love, he would attend every football match that his great grandson played in, every dance concert, every graduation, every family occasion. He would travel to Melbourne for a visit when a granddaughter and great granddaughter moved there and he wouldn’t miss out on anyone’s birthday. He was thrilled with every young life that was added to the family and his smile was the brightest when he held our latest addition, two year old Bodhi, on his 90th birthday.
He was extremely proud of every member of his family, his children, his granddaughters, his great grandchildren and those that became new members of the family.
Eric was a proud and independent man, loved by everyone who knew him. He continued to drive until 6 months ago. He lived in his own home. He did his own shopping, cooking and looked after himself for as long as he could.
Eric passed away quietly and peacefully on the 28th February at Joondalup hostpital.
He is greatly missed.

Notes for Arthur Harold Clutterbuck
Eulogy for Arthur. Written by his brother Ken Clutterbuck and read at his funeral.
Although this is a sad day for everyone here, this is also a day for us to celebrate Arthur’s life.
Arthur was the second eldest of four brothers – Peter, Arthur, Roy and then myself. We were all born in London, went to Alexander Park Primary School, and then went on to Bounds Green High School. Yes we all went to the same schools, which meant when you followed your brothers, as I did because I was the youngest, you were labeled. In Arthur’s case he was very good at school – he was very brainy, skilled at metal work and also a very good runner (although I suspect most of his training look place running after girls!) so all the teachers presumed the rest of us were also as talented.
By 1966 at the age of 24 Arthur had a lovely wife, Sheila and 4 lovely children Carol, Linda, Paul and Mark and that was when they migrated to Australia. It was here that their youngest son David was born and he was our first true Aussie in the family.
Arthur, Sheila and the children lived in a railway house in The Crescent Midland – a 2 bedroom 1 bathroom home, which was fine until the rest of the family decided to come to Australia, with our mum, dad, Roy and myself also living with them for a couple of months - things were a bit more of a squeeze. It would have been worse if our oldest brother Peter was there too, but due to his somewhat checkered past, he was not able to leave the UK with us! Soon our house in Lynwood was built and off we went.
Arthur was a tool maker in England – in Australia it was referred to as a fitter and turner. He came to Australia with a job at the railways and he continued to work at the railway workshop until he retired. By the time he retired he was the supervisor of the workshop, but for some unknown reason his retirement came just short of his eligibility for a Gold Card for the railways. Something he continued to be cranky about for a long while. Linda recalls telling her friends that “Those trains wouldn’t run if my dad didn’t make the wheels”
Arthur had a good work ethic, but possibly even more so when it came to completing “home jobs” at work. One job I remember Arthur undertaking was completely rebuilding my gearbox for me. Thanks Arthur and I guess thanks Westrail. During this time Arthur also was a regular donator of blood to the Red Cross clinic – in fact he was even awarded for donating the most blood. We suspect his real drive to donate was the couple of hours allowed away from the workshop and the free tea and biscuits.
Arthur was very good and very precise at his job. And throughout life he would teach himself and complete renovations and fix almost anything on his own and very precisely. Arthur moved from The Crescent to Kerwin Way where they all lived until Arthur moved to Bayswater where he remained until he retired. Lucky because his home was situated between the Maylands Hotel and the Bayswater Hotel – so he had a few options. Combine with his home brew and there was not much chance to dehydrate.
And we have a few more memories of Arthur and his home brew. Besides everyone commenting that his was the best beer – and meaning it! Arthur has his recipe down to a fine art. On bottling night, all the kids had a job to do, washing the bottles, adding the sugar and the brew into the bottles and then topping them. Then they were stored under Arthur and Sheila’s bed. That was until some bottles started exploding and Sheila put her foot down and the bottles were then stored in the shed. Arthur always enjoyed cooking and he always cooked the Sunday roast. Later in life he became very good at curries, and always put on a big feast. Arthur also loved music – country style music – and the more home brew he drank the louder the music generally got. His preferred drink had recently changed to green ginger wine I believe.
Not long after retirement Arthur relocated to Beverley in the wheat belt where he lived a simple life on his property, happy with his chooks – or “his girls” as he called them - as company and assorted fruit trees. This reminds me that Arthur always had chooks in his life, in particular when we were younger we had a rooster called Sampson. No one could get close to this rooster – it was vicious, but Arthur could pick it up and carry it under his arm like a baby. He was always kind natured to animals and always had a dog too. Arthur enjoyed Beverley – he liked the quiet and the solitude. He had always loved gardening, so this was an opportunity for him to have the garden and veggie garden of his dreams – most of us also benefitted from this too. Recently, Arthur loved Beverley even more as the bakery opened in town. He was delighted that his doctor told him he needed to put on some weight, so he took it upon himself to indulge in his favourite chocolate éclairs – every day. He would go to the bakery to get a loaf of bread and a cake (or two).
Arthur enjoyed his own company but had a few good friends. When he had visitors all were welcomed and you would never leave hungry, thirsty or without full egg cartons and fresh fruit and vegetables when in season.
I shall remember the times with our brother Roy, like fishing trips to Dwellingup, Madora Bay and Timms Thicket. If the fish weren’t biting there was always a flagon of wine and a yarn to pass the night away. Arthur always enjoyed fishing, ocean fishing, reef fishing, marronning and crabbing. We had great family holidays to Dwellingup at Easter, Roy would play guitar and we would have campfires and all join in singing. Arthur also enjoyed holidays to Kalbarri – he would book a railway house for a couple of weeks and head up to fish. Linda and Mark would often join him for a week also.
I love Arthur and Roy very much and both are now sadly missed, as well as our brother Peter. I’m sure we will meet again, and there will be many more tales to tell.

15. Sheila Gladys Lee. Sheila Gladys was born on 6 December 1939 in 31, Brook Road, Hornsey, County Of London, England. She died on 16 March 2018 in Mirrambeena Nursing Home, 21, Farrelly Street, Margaret River, Western Australia, Australia at the age of 78 years, 3 months. She was the daughter of Ronald Victor Lee and Ella Maud Fomes.
Notes for Sheila Gladys Lee
Eulogy for Sheila. Written by her daughters Linda and Carol and read at her funeral.
Sheila was born in London in 1939. She was the daughter of Ronald and Ella Lee. She was born in harsh times; World War Two had started shortly before Sheila was born, and when her father went to war, her mother abandoned her and her two siblings, Ronald and June. Consequently she spent some time living in an orphanage and with their grandmother until her father returned from the war and reclaimed the three children. Her father later remarried and they had a daughter, Sheila’s step sister Sandra. Her stepmother was strict and uncompromising. She was known only as ‘Mother’. Given all this, it is not difficult to understand where Sheila’s feisty, independent nature was formed.
Sheila went to work when she was 14, but it was while working in Guys Engineering, sanding and drilling - making parts for planes, that she met Arthur whom she later married. Sheila had fond memories of Arthur sending her love letters down the production line in the factory until the boss discovered this and moved Sheila to a different section. Sheila and Arthur married in 1959. (They divorced in 1978 and Sheila was later married to Jozef Van Hamersveld from 1980 until 1990.)
In 1966 Sheila and Arthur and their young family migrated to Western Australia. Challenge was a common theme of Sheila’s life. It must have been very difficult to pack her life into a suitcase and depart from what was home to a foreign land and lifestyle with young children in tow.
Sheila loved her children; Carol, Linda, Paul, Mark and David, and loved to be involved with her grandchildren, Angela, Rachel, Allan, Chris, Christopher and James, and her great grandson Bodhi. For many years Sheila lived with Linda and her husband Ian and cared for their two sons, Christopher and James. Sheila gladly travelled with Linda and her family to wherever Ian’s job took them – Kalgoorlie, Leinster, Townsville, and Mandurah – and formed a strong bond with her grandsons.
Sheila always took great delight and interest in the lives of her grandchildren and her great grandson. She would use Facebook to message and keep up with news, she learned how to use video chats. In recent years she loved to view videos of baby Bodhi and delighted in his every moment. Sheila’s home was filled with photos of her family; weddings, birthday celebrations, graduations…happy moments recorded and displayed with pride.
Sheila loved her four legged family too. It seems like there was always a pet in her life - Sophie was her much loved, cup of tea drinking and lolly eating Silkie Terrier. Sheila’s children’s pets also had an important place in Sheila’s life- they were her extended family; Sandi, Mollie, Star and Bob the Dog, and she could always be counted on to share a treat with them. And Sheila loved that Bob was able to visit her in her room when she moved into the nursing home.
Sheila loved to sew. She made clothes for her grandchildren, as well as aprons, bags, table cloths and decorations for her daughters. Her sewing machine travelled with her. When Sheila moved into a Seniors Village in Kalgoorlie she continued sewing for the Community Centre, making turbans for the Cancer foundation, and joined other craft groups which held stalls and raised money for charity. Sheila loved to be involved and active; she enjoyed bingo, craft groups, bowls, as well as reading and talking about books. Sheila was a very social person, and loved to know what was going on with everyone.
When Sheila moved to Mandurah to be closer to her family, she made a long lasting, good friend – her neighbour Maureen. Sheila and Maureen went out and about together, Sheila was the driver and Maureen was the navigator. They went on bus trips to the Burswood Casino many a time - a cheap day out with great food. Sheila always had an eye for value or a bargain, and loved the thrill of the casino.
Throughout her life Sheila loved food. Her tastes were simple; she loved jam and cream sponges, doughnuts, fried chicken, fish and chips, ginger nut biscuits. She loved a BBQ with her family – Mother’s Day, birthdays, any time was a good reason for a BBQ. Not only did she love food but she loved watching others create exotic tempting dishes…visits to Carol and Garry’s house would see her sitting on a stool at the kitchen bench engrossed in the process of creating a culinary treat in front of her. Exotic foods – such as “Ding Dong Noodles”. Actually Udon Noodles but her hearing was not so great by then – or she didn’t have her hearing aids in…
In her later years Sheila’s health became compromised with various ailments – some critical. Cancer and heart issues were something she did not want to discuss – in fact she would often claim that she was not ill, that there was nothing wrong with her. Memory issues also surfaced. During this period of her life she became increasing dependant on Linda’s assistance to remain in her own home. Linda attended appointments with her, took her to specialists and held her hand during procedures. Other family members also stepped in to help when they were needed.
Sheila later experienced several falls, and it became obvious to those around her that this feisty woman needed more help in her daily life. With Linda and Ian moving to Mt Isa, and Sheila not well enough to go with them this time, Mark and Mandy willingly opened their home to Sheila. Sheila’s health declined further and a sea change was deemed appropriate and Sheila moved into Mirambeena Nursing Home in Margaret River. Sheila flourished in her new surroundings. She loved the social aspect of the home, she made friends with Bernice (who had a room across from her), and she enjoyed conversations at meal times with Norma, Harry and Don. She loved the bus outings- to the Berry Farm, the beach, to local parks and gardens. She got her hair done, her nails painted and enjoyed shoulder massages and “Happy Hour”.
She was thankful for visits from all her family, even those she hadn’t seen in some time. They took her out for meals, for coffee, shopping and for trips to Carol and Garry’s home where she enjoyed her beloved BBQ and a glass of wine. Here Sheila collaborated on Carol’s art work – giving advice on colour selections and style. She was enthusiastic and proud of the end results. She had a wonderful last Christmas and unwrapped her presents with great joy, relishing in being spoiled and having family around her.
However, Sheila’s health rapidly deteriorated, cancer was making its presence felt. Although she didn’t want anyone to fuss after her, it was clear that the battle against cancer could not be won. After picking up an infection that she couldn’t shake things rapidly declined. Sheila passed away peacefully surrounded by love and in the thoughts of all her family.
Sheila will be remembered for her spirited, independent and sometimes stubborn nature; and for her wonderful, genuine laugh - something we were all lucky to hear a lot more of in the last couple of years.

Notes for John David Mee
Marie Boyce in her family history book 'Family History and Genealogy of John Mee Married Agnes Pannowitz' shows John Mee arriving in Brisbane aboard the Southesk on the 17th, March 1877. He later apears in Victoria. This claim needs to be verified. There is a 5 yr age discrepancy between John and the one arriving in Brisbane. Also the age of the John arriving in Brisbane would seem to fit with the family group he arrived with.

Ref: http://www.archives.qld.gov.au/Researchers/ImmigrationIndexes/Documents/Southesk_1877_QSA_Item_ID_18477.pdf page 8.
Another possibility is John Mee aged 17, born 1856 (the correct age) arriving in Port Adelaide 1875 aboard the Hesperides. In this case the age is correct and the location seems more probable. As in Marie's case there is no indication that this is the correct John David Mee.

Notes for John Bruniges
The 1790's were brutal years for the Bruniges families who where living in Wentworth Street, Spitalfields. The family of John and Elizabeth Sarah was decimated, assumingly by disease as these where awful times in the East End of London.
John and Elizabeth lost a son Henry in 1790 when he was about 1 year old. Two years later in 1793 they lost a 2 year old daughter Elizabeth and then later in the same year another son William died only months old. The following year in February 1794 John himself died aged only 35. Later the same year in October his wife Elizabeth Sarah died aged 37. They were survived by their three older children Ann (10), John(8) and Martin(7).
The following year 1795, close by and likely in the same building in Wentworth Street, Johns brother George and his wife Martha lost their 2 year old daughter Ann Margaret in February, followed 7 months later in September by another daughter Mary Ann aged 3 years. Then 3 Months later in December of 1795 George and Johns father Martin died at the age of 77 having seen 5 grandchildren and his son and daughter-in-law dying over the previous 5 years.

He married Elizabeth Celia on 28 February 1756 in Saint Nicholas Cathedral, Gloucester, Gloucestershire, England.
Notes for Martin Bruniges
Martin Bruniges is a wealthy sugar refiner who has several sugar refining busnesses and partnerships over many years and up until his death aged 77 years. In his will Martin leaves a significant part of his wealth to George Bruniges ("now my boiler") and also to Martin Bruniges and John Bruniges ("children of John Bruniges deceased"). Although he does not refer to George and John as his sons, nor Martin and John as his grandsons they are all living in Wentworth Street at this time. So this would seem a likely scenario.
